The work schedule hasn’t been friendly for making it to Nerf wars That’s left me having as much fun as I can with soakers and gel ball blasters at home – and letting the wife shoot me a lot. In that spirit – and even when it’s freezing outside – let’s review the next soaker from this spring’s selection!
The Nerf Super Soaker Mega Dunk-Fill works exactly as advertised, and puts a fair bit of water downrange. Just don’t be tilting it up and down a lot unless you want to siphon out all your water!
Made for Dipping
Let’s look inside the blaster first, so we can explain that last sentence!
The Dunk-Fill soakers are all made to fill with water through a large valve at the end of the tank. Dip the soaker, and the water flows up. Of course, the air inside has to go somewhere…and when your blaster’s reservoir is horizontal, you have to engineer a creative approach.
The solution? A super long drainage hose with extra bends. For general use, it works well enough – after dunking the blaster, a little bit of water can get into the tubing, but you don’t have to worry about anything substantial spilling out (and what little does can exit the blaster via small holes in the shell). And if you’re constantly firing, that’s an extra place for air to get sucked into the reservoir.
If, however, you tilt the blaster up and down a bunch, enough water can work its way through the hose to start draining out and siphoning the reservoir. This is especially true if you tried filling the blaster from a hose; it’s possible to do if you depress the filling valve and pour in water. Doing so, however, means you end up filling the drain hose halfway already. So it’s REALLY easy to initiate that siphoning effect!
Dunk-Fill is a choice, and it works well, but if you’re a “fill with a hose” person, you might have issues.
The Rest of the Blaster!
All this being said, the blaster operates like you’d expect. The reservoir is decently spacious, holding a full liter of water. The blaster is long, with an acceptable stock for bracing against the shoulder. It’s a $15 soaker, not a pro-level monstrosity, after all. The pump handle is fairly plain, but with a rear notch that you can press into, even with slippery hands. Overall, it’s a decent blaster for the price.
I averaged 20mL a shot, meaning you theoretically have up to 50 shots before needing to reload. In terms of range, the vast majority of the water makes it to at least 25′ with a smooth, consistent pumping action, and 30′ is about as far out as you can hit someone with enough water for them to notice. The scope doesn’t really help for aiming an arc of water, of course, but it looks cool!
Last Thoughts
The Mega Dunk Fill is an inexpensive blaster with a fun filling mechanism and decent soakage. Given the current state of soakers on the market, that’s about as much as you can ask for.
Just don’t be twirling the blaster around or waving it up and down unless you REALLY want to watch the reservoir empty out the holes in the shell.
