First Read: Targeting the New Blasters – SO MANY DPCI NUMBERS!

After spending an afternoon hoping to track down Buzz Bee’s The Walking Dead Rick’s Revolver (which as it turns out uses the SAME UPC as Carl’s Revolver in its ToysRus entry), I decided to research some more things. Target has a DPCI number system it uses for its products. Using sites like Brickseek (originally meant for finding Lego sets), you can look up product info and availability online.

While some item prices are no longer listed, the item descriptions are. Some are known upcoming blasters. Others will make you look twice and wonder what the heck is going on. MAY THE SPECULATION BEGIN!

Zecong Toys Zeus Clone Review

Chinese toy companies are known to produce their own versions of popular toy blasters, if not outright copies. One such company is Zecong Toys. Known mostly for the “Blaze Storm” series of blasters, they tend to put their own spin on products. In this case, they’ve copied the Rival Zeus. But does it stand up to the original?

In the interest of full disclosure, I was one of a few people to import large quantities of these blasters from China, and will have them on sale again at some point when I’m not so busy. I’ll do my best to give an impartial opinion, though!

Review: Star Wars Jyn Erso Deluxe Blaster

As part of the merchandise lines for Rogue One, Hasbro produced and released multiple new Star Wars blasters. The blaster in question, the Jyn Erso blaster, is the largest and most expensive of the ones slated for general release, and was the only one of the three that presented anything of interest to me. It took a 50% discount for me to even consider buying one, but even at that price, is it worth the money?

Buffdaddy’s HvZ Adventures

It’s been a fun few months, to say the least! In between work schedules, appointments, and life in general, I found time to make it to a few HvZ games. Less than I’d like (I missed both the BGSU and Ohio University Invitationals), but enough to keep me on my toes!

New Paltz

This was a long trip from Ohio, taking up virtually an entire day in either direction. Granted, I made more than a few stops at thrift stores, Walmarts, and regional stores that aren’t in Ohio. Still, it’s the farthest I’ve personally driven for any type of Nerf War or HvZ event, my Canada trips included.

I made this trip mainly to meet many fellow players I’ve talked to online. Personal connections and all that. Big thanks to Dennis, one of the New Paltz crew, for letting me crash at his place for two nights.

The theme was time travel – something that seemed to be popular at many HvZ events this spring. Our missions had us traveling further back in time as the day progressed, with missions varying between scavenging and escorting. For ease of packing and use, I ended up playing with a Boomco Flipbow and a Burstwave. Good blasters, great ammo density, and a shotgun burst when needed. I made it most of the way, until the beginning of the last mission in ancient Egypt. The humans fell quickly at that point, although the cold weather may have been a factor (GO INSIDE TO WARMER TEMPERATURES ALREADY!). We were ready to end it after the Roman era mission anyway 😛

Youngstown State University

This was a great one. YSU held a Game of Thrones “Survivational” where we split up into three factions (Stark, Targaryen, and Lannister) and fought to dominate areas of central campus at different points of the day. We earned gold for all the areas we held, to be spent on human goodies and such. Partway through the day, after a “disastrous” wedding which spawned zombies, the factions had to fight both each other and the zombies. So the day ended up being part Nerf War/King of the Hill, part HvZ, and it worked quite well.

The night missions before the main event (which were mainly for fun, aside from the BFG), I ran around with a Buzz Bee Boss and a bunch of twelve dart mega clips. Most of the day, until it stopped working, I ran my Captain America Fraudulus. When that happened (an easy to fix issue, at least), I had to run as a sock ninja to help defeat one boss zombie.

For the finale, I opted to run my Flipbow for the accuracy and the ammo density. It ended up being a wise choice, and I shot over 250 Boomco darts during that time. Almost the last human, but I paused in one place for two seconds too long.

It was a blast, especially since part of the New Paltz crew made the drive to Ohio!

OSU Invitational

I don’t have any good pictures or footage, sadly, but it was a great time. The theme was saving rock and roll, as Adam Levine was going through time and trying to destroy good music. So we had missions to reunite the Beatles (and avoid a boss Yoko Ono), get Elvis to a performance (we failed miserably), and do various minigames against the zombies (TANK BOP-IT!).

Partway through, I earned the Vanguard ability. Essentially, I had a short foam noodle sword for tagging zombies. In addition, I could snap a glowstick and be invulnerable for thirty seconds each mission. This was best used in the finale, when there were only a couple humans left. Half a second before I was caught, I snapped the glowstick, started counting out loud to thirty, and began tagging almost the entire horde. Then I died shortly after. But it was at least a valiant death.

I used my Flipbow the entire day; I’ve gotten very used to using it. It was crazy how many zombie I made good shots on right as they were respawning. Many headshots were had.

If anything, I at least got the award for best human! It was a potato.

Knex KForce 2016 Rotoshot Review

Last week, the people at Knex were kind enough to send me samples of their current blaster line for review, while we wait on the new models shown at Toy Fair to become available. My sincerest thanks to them! I’ll cover the Flash Fire in another post, since it’s a different animal.

The second generation of KForce blasters included motorized and multishot blasters. Two models of the Rotoshot (with a five dart revolving chamber) can be found for $40, each including over 200 pieces in addition to the main blaster unit. Do they perform, and are they worth it? Quite simply, it depends on your enthusiasm for building. Continue reading
